montage: an enlistment photo and the National WWII Memorial (a commission)

Last summer Tim and his grandfather (a WWII veteran) traveled with the Indy Honor Flight program to Washington D.C. to the National WWII Memorial.

For Christmas, Tim had the idea to give his grandfather an original drawing that brought together his grandfather's enlistment photo and the WWII Memorial. Tim sent me pictures from their trip, a scan of the enlistment photo and a few notes.

I sent him a sketch of a composition-idea: unite the two images with a wheat wreath (an element of each of the pillars at the Memorial). We spoke on the phone so I could learn more of his grandfather's story and confirm plans for the design.

It was a special task creating this piece, reflecting on the connection between these two inspiring and honorable images and bringing them together in one drawing.

I also appreciated learning more about this organization: Indy Honor Flight

Indy Honor Flight is part of the National Honor Flight Network.

Here is the completed drawing: (graphite pencil, 11"x14")
